"Para Equestrian Dressage offers me limitless opportunities on and with the horse. I find it fascinating to see the relationship between human and horse grow and work together towards goals. Horses have no prejudices based on appearance or physical handicaps. They just take people as they are."

"I am a fan of the HKM brand because the quality has convinced me at all times so far. The products are always adapted to the latest needs of the horse and equestrian world."
How it all began
Mara Meyer came to equestrian sport via hippotherapy. The English and media science student has lived with spastic tetraparesis since birth, which manifests itself in a high basic tension in her muscles and a severe impairment of her balance and coordination. For this reason, the then four-year-old began therapy on horseback. Mara quickly fell in love with the graceful four-legged friends and wanted more. So it came about that in 2010 Little Dream, the first pony of her own, moved into the stable and from then on belonged to the family. It was also the bay Welsh pony mare with whom Mara competed in her first competition in regular sport and ventured into para-dressage sport. The biggest competition the pair competed in together was Mara's first German Championship. The horse lover has many role models, including Sir Lee Pearson from England, the most successful para-dressage rider in history.
Medal pony Cookie
In 2012, the pony mare Nadira came into the life of Mara and her family. Initially still mousy and at home in the show jumping ring, the young mare with the call name Cookie soon showed her talent for dressage. With Mara's younger brother Frederik, she was successful in the show ring as well as in the arena. Since 2016, Cookie has now been predominantly based in para-sport and, with Mara, won the bronze medal in the young rider championship for para-dressage riders at the German Championships in her very first season as a parapony. In the following years, Mara and Cookie developed into the dream couple in the para dressage arena and celebrated two gold medals together in the Young Riders Championships at the German Championships as well as several international successes.
Mara's sporting dream
European Championships, World Championships, the Paralympics - being able to represent Germany at a championship is right at the top of Mara's sporting wish list. To get closer to this goal, she has been training for some time with the dark bay daughter of the Quadroneur, Querida Kay. Affectionately called Carry in everyday life, the warmblood mare is in dual training with Mara and her brother Frederik. In addition to her preparation for a career in para-dressage, Carry is being classically trained in dressage by Frederik and his trainers and is well on her way to the medium level.
You can't do it without a team
If equestrian sport is already costly, para-horse sport is even more so. Although Mara is very independent in dealing with her horses despite her disability, cleaning them herself, mucking out the stable and fetching hay, she cannot do it without outside help. Because of her disability, Mara can neither trot nor canter easily. This is done by an outside rider during training or in the warm-up arena - usually her brother Frederik or her mother. In para-sport, it is quite normal that riders with severe handicaps receive support in preparing their horses.
Since the spring of 2021, Millie, a young dog, has been at the edge of the arena and always with us in everyday life. The spotted mongrel accompanies Mara wherever she goes and is currently being trained as an assistance dog for her owner.
Besides Frederik, mum Viola is an indispensable part of Mara's team. She looks after the horses on a daily basis, takes care of the organisation and trains with Mara almost every day. Furthermore, Mara is supported by the co-national trainer of the Para dressage riders, Rolf Grebe, who has accompanied her for many years, and by the dressage rider and mental coach Anna Klues. The team around the young athlete is completed by physiotherapists and sports scientists. Of course, the team also includes a blacksmith, a veterinarian, an equine physiotherapist and a competent and creative saddler who equips her with customised equipment and innovative aids.
